Do you remember swimming at Cyprus Street Baths? Were you in the pageant at Longford Park in 1958? What was Chester Road like in the 1960s?\n2pm: Elizabeth Gow\, John Rylands Library – ‘Books and bathing at Stretford Town Hall’. Elizabeth will be giving a talk about Enriqueta Rylands\, of Longford Hall. Enriqueta was the founder of the John Rylands Library and helped to develop the library and swimming baths at\, what was then\, Stretford Town Hall.\n3pm: Rock against Racism Xmas Party – join us to share your memories of Stretford Civic Theatre’s most notorious gig – the Rock Against Racism Xmas Party. We will be joined by Bernie Wilcox\, one of the organisers of the gig\, Una Baines\, who played as a member of The Fall\, as well as Chris Hewitt from Ozit Records\, who have recently reissued a recording of The Fall’s set from the night.\n\nThere will be a café serving tea and cake all day\, and the hall will be open from 12 – 4pm. DESCRIPTION:The ‘M/other Work’ addresses those who are active caregivers towards their children. ‘M/other’ implies the experience of otherness that may arise from being a parent. \nThese workshops aim to offer easy movement activities\, creative expression\, connection and play for you and your child. The intention is for participants to express the artist in them\, alongside other parents and children. Merging our caregiving roles with our creative ones. \nEach participant will be given a notebook to archive their rambles\, poems\, free writes \, scribbles and everything else that comes to them in or between sessions. \nSessions involve: movement\, play\, creative writing\, mark making. \nMovement activities are simple. DESCRIPTION:This July\, we welcome Richard Haslam to Stretford Public hall for a very special classical guitar recital. \n  \nJoin us on the 17th of July for a unique and intimate 60-minute performance by this highly accomplished Manchester-based guitarist. It will be followed by an opportunity to share an informal discussion with Richard. \n  \nThis promises to be an afternoon full of colour and variety\, demonstrating Richard’s range and versatility with the guitar. Featuring works by Sor\, Barrios\, Villa-Lobos\, Ryan\, and Dowland \n \nDoors will be at 2 pm\, with the recital starting at 2:30 pm. \n  \nThe Friends Of Stretford Public Hall bar will be open throughout for refreshments and as always all proceeds will go towards the running and restoration of the hall. \n  \nThe standard ticket price is £7.00. He completed a post-graduate degree in music performance at the Royal Northern College of Music\, Manchester\, under the tutelage of Australian guitarist Craig Ogden in 2017\, having previously earned a BA (Hons) in music from the University of Hull in 2013. \nSince completing his studies\, Richard has given recitals as both a soloist and within a variety of ensembles. DESCRIPTION:We are excited to be hosting our second jazz tea dance in the Ballroom\, with the wonderful jazz singer Nishla Smith. Nishla will be joined by a band of the UK’s leading young improvisers on keys\, bass and drums\, to perform contemporary takes on classic jazz standards. \nRefreshments and a selection of fantastic cakes will be available for sale\, courtesy of local bakery KiwiCakes. Doors will open at 2.30pm with the live music performance starting at 3pm. \nThe standard ticket price is £8.00 with concession and ‘pay what you can options’. For this event\, we’re also trialling allowing guests to reserve a table\, should they wish to. When you book tickets\, you will have the option to: \n\nReserve a cabaret table near the stage\nReserve a family table towards the back – ideal for those bringing children.\n\nTables will be offered on a first-come-first serve basis so we cannot guarantee the preferred option for all attendees. \nAbout Nishla Smith\nNishla is a singer and writer driven by a desire to tell stories. Her unique musical sensibility\, along with this preoccupation with narrative\, is recurrent throughout a diverse array of musical projects. She’s recently made work for Opera North\, Lancaster Jazz Festival and Manchester Collective. \n \nNishla is a City Music Foundation artist\, and part of Jazz North’s Northern Line artist roster. She’s one third of cross-disciplinary arts collective Ulita\, and leads an original jazz band\, the Nishla Smith Quintet\, with whom she released a debut album\, ‘Friends With Monsters’ on Whirlwind Recordings in Autumn 2021. DESCRIPTION:UK cinemas are uniting in support of Ukraine with a series of preview charity screenings of Olga\, a new film about a young female Ukrainian gymnast forced to train in exile. From each ticket sold\, a donation will be made to support Ukraine via the Disasters Emergency Committee. \nOlga tells the story of a 15-year-old Ukrainian gymnast\, training for the European Championship in preparation for the Olympics. Olga is forced to move to Switzerland from her home in Kyiv where her mother works as an investigative journalist reporting on the Euromaidan protests. \nAll profits go to the Disasters Emergency Committee. \nThe Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) brings together 15 leading UK aid charities to raise funds quickly and efficiently at times of crisis overseas.
