DESCRIPTION:‘Northern Soul’ is the story of the 1970s youth culture that developed in Northern England and changed a generation. It’s an authentic and uplifting account of two young boys whose horizons are opened up by the discovery of black American soul music.  \nSet in Lancashire in 1974\, the film follows Matt and John as they leave behind a humdrum life of youth clubs and factory lines to chase a dream of travelling to the US\, unearthing unknown soul 45s and establishing themselves as top DJ’s on the Northern soul music scene. Their dance and drug-fuelled quest brings them into contact with some of the darker elements of the scene and tests their friendship to its limits. With a killer soundtrack that will guarantee you get your kicks out on the floor! \n\n\n\n\nThe doors and the bar will open at 7pm\nThe screening of ‘Northern Soul’ will begin at 7.15pm. DESCRIPTION:At Holiday Comedy Club\, they use comedy as a way of getting creative\, playing\, and learning about ourselves as well as performance techniques. \nAvailable for young people aged 6-12 their groups will take part in a drama style workshop where they focus on the funny\, whilst creating comedy characters and sketches rather than stand-up comedy. \nThey use improvisation games and exercises to focus on being in the moment\, building resilience and increasing the confidence of their students all through a comedic lens and storytelling. \nThey encourage children to express themselves and share their observations of the world in a safe and fun environment. \nTheir sessions are filled with fun games and comedy drama techniques where they learn\, develop\, and show our work back to one another: therefore team work is a big part of what they do. \nEvery day at their Holiday Comedy Club we cover different content so your children can attend any number of days. \nBig Comedy Shop runs Improvisation Comedy After School Clubs in several primary schools in Manchester. They also deliver bespoke comedy issue-based workshops in primary and high schools as well as our run Holiday Comedy Club days. \nBig Comedy Shop was founded in 2007 by Ali Kahn who is an award-winning comedy actor and writer whose work includes being a series regular in CBBC comedy shows ‘Still So Awkward’ and CBBC comedy sketch show ‘Class Dismissed” (series 6). SUMMARY:Amid the Mirk Over the Irk: When Irish Meets Klezmer
DESCRIPTION:Either side of an innocuous\, unremarkable river live two immigrant communities shunned by the city in which they live; yet\, these communities came here in search of better times away from pogrom and famine. \nWhere is “here”? Well…”here” can be anywhere\, but for the sake of argument let’s say 19th-Century Manchester and the River Irk that flows through it. Though their cultures seem wildly different\, there is more that unites them that divides them\, in spite of the noxious river between them. \nIn this imagined meeting-of-worlds gig theatre\, the musical fusion of Jewish Klezmer and Irish Trad is explored in all its joy\, melancholy\, love\, sadness\, and infectious danceability; although perhaps discordant on first hearing\, Amid the Mirk Over the Irk explores the natural and quirky points of intersection between these 2 deeply personally significant folk dance musics and – by association – their cultures\, through their 7-8 piece folk-fusion band\, short stories\, and evocative visuals. It explores the intrigue\, awkwardness\, and respect of unfamiliar cultures sharing the same space. \nThe show took Manchester by storm in 2016 when it played to full houses at the Manchester Jewish Museum featuring local legends Mike McGoldrick\, Dezi Donnolly\, and Ange Durcan. \nSince then it has played around the North West\, reaching the finals for Manchester Culture Awards and Celtic Connections Danny Kyle Open Stage competition in 2022. \n\n\n\n\nThis is a ticketed event in two halves separated by a short interval when non-alcoholic hot and cold drinks can be purchased. \nDoors open from 7.10pm for a prompt 7.30pm start. \nStretford Public Hall has step-free access with lift access throughout the building. \nWe also offer a complimentary carer ticket for those who require a carer. DESCRIPTION:Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt unsafe in the streets\, parks\, or transport in Trafford or anywhere in Greater Manchester? If you want to tackle gendered violence and make our public spaces safer and more welcoming for women\, girls\, and all residents? Hands up if you wish you had more power to change the rules in Trafford and GM? \nWe’re a group of North Trafford young people and adults who’ve been building a play that reflects our lived experiences with safety in parks\, on public transport\, near schools\, in the roads\, and more. We invite you to join us for a fun and lively Legislative Theatre event\, to change the rules together! \nWhat is Legislative Theatre? \nIn Legislative Theatre\, audiences and policymakers watch a play based on the community actors’ experiences with oppressive policies and practices. Then\, audiences act onstage to rehearse ways to confront the problems presented\, and test new policies in real time. Actors and audiences propose ideas for new laws\, rules and policies to address the problems\, working together with advocates\, organizers\, and government representatives. DESCRIPTION:Discover the history of Stretford Public Hall at our free heritage open day \nThe Friends of Stretford Public Hall look forward to welcoming local residents to our second Heritage Open Day on Saturday 16 September\, from 12 noon until 3pm. \nCome and learn about the history of this impressive Grade II listed building and the people and events that helped to shape it through the years\, turning it into the prominent and valuable community resource it is today. \nVisitors will have the chance to tour parts of the building that are not usually open to the public\, such as the hall’s clock tower and the vast basement. Tours will take place every half hour\, starting in the foyer. \nAt 1pm\, local Green Badge tour guide and Heritage Specialist\, Alexa Fairclough\, will deliver a talk in the ballroom about the history of Stretford. \nThroughout the afternoon we will be showing films about the hall’s most recent history\, explaining how our Friends group took on the challenge of managing and restoring the hall. It will also be an opportunity to learn about plans for the further development of the hall\, as Simon Borkin\, Chair of our Board\, will explain. \nChildren will be able to try out a variety of craft activities during the afternoon. \nRefreshments and cakes will be available at our café. \nThe heritage open day will be run by hall staff and volunteers who will be on hand to provide information and answer any questions. \nAnyone wishing to get involved with the hall can sign up to become a volunteer.
