DESCRIPTION:If you want to work on your Bal\, or are keen to learn\, then we’ve a real treat for you\, at the beautifully restored Stretford Public Hall. Sam Dobbie from Bristol will be joining our own Jo Barnes\, to deliver two one hour workshops… \n10.30am Suitable for everybody\, including complete beginners. \n11.45am Suitable for improvers\, or those that attended the first class. \nAfter lunch\, the Friends of Stretford Public Hall are running a jazz tea dance with live music\, and they’re offering half price tickets to workshop attendees\, available from the Stretford Public Hall website. \nSam’s dance journey started out in 2012 after being brought (or arguably dragged) along to a lindy hop social in Toronto\, Canada. After some trepidation he found he did actually enjoy dancing after all\, and quickly found classes for blues and balboa as well as lindy. Fast forward to the current day and Sam regularly dances and teaches all three styles\, and is one of the founding members of Bristol Swing Riot. As well as dancing\, he DJs for socials and is a self confessed music nerd. \nIf you don’t know Joanne\, then where have you even been? Jo is one of Manchester’s most prolific swing dancers\, and even if you think you don’t know her\, we’re fairly sure that you do! She got the balboa bug some years back\, and has lost count of the hours of classes and dances she’s attended. DESCRIPTION:Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)\, sometimes called female circumcision or female genital cutting\, is a global problem and a controversial issue. TRC are pleased to be hosting an event within the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence. DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Black History month\, we are screening Hidden Figures (PG) \nAs the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space\, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians that served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. Based on the unbelievably true life stories of three of these women\, known as “human computers”\, we follow these women as they quickly rose the ranks of NASA alongside many of history’s greatest minds specifically tasked with calculating the momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit\, and guaranteeing his safe return. Do you remember swimming at Cyprus Street Baths? Were you in the pageant at Longford Park in 1958? What was Chester Road like in the 1960s?\n2pm: Elizabeth Gow\, John Rylands Library – ‘Books and bathing at Stretford Town Hall’. Elizabeth will be giving a talk about Enriqueta Rylands\, of Longford Hall. Enriqueta was the founder of the John Rylands Library and helped to develop the library and swimming baths at\, what was then\, Stretford Town Hall.\n3pm: Rock against Racism Xmas Party – join us to share your memories of Stretford Civic Theatre’s most notorious gig – the Rock Against Racism Xmas Party. We will be joined by Bernie Wilcox\, one of the organisers of the gig\, Una Baines\, who played as a member of The Fall\, as well as Chris Hewitt from Ozit Records\, who have recently reissued a recording of The Fall’s set from the night.\n\nThere will be a café serving tea and cake all day\, and the hall will be open from 12 – 4pm. DESCRIPTION:The ‘M/other Work’ addresses those who are active caregivers towards their children. ‘M/other’ implies the experience of otherness that may arise from being a parent. \nThese workshops aim to offer easy movement activities\, creative expression\, connection and play for you and your child. The intention is for participants to express the artist in them\, alongside other parents and children. Merging our caregiving roles with our creative ones. \nEach participant will be given a notebook to archive their rambles\, poems\, free writes \, scribbles and everything else that comes to them in or between sessions. \nSessions involve: movement\, play\, creative writing\, mark making. \nMovement activities are simple.
