Repair Café at Stretford Public Hall

What do you do with a broken toaster? Or with a jumper full of moth holes? Bin it? No way! Stretford Public Hall is continuing the Repair Cafés previously run by Stitched Up.

Repair Café is a community event, where you can bring along your broken items from home such as toasters, lamps, hair dryers, clothes, bikes, toys, crockery… anything that is broken is welcome. The Repair Café specialists almost always have the know-how.

Starting at 10:00 till 12:00 various volunteer repair experts will be available to help. Tools and materials will also be on hand.

We throw away huge amounts of stuff in the UK every day, even things which have practically nothing wrong with them, which could easily be used again after a simple repair. Unfortunately, many people have forgotten that they can have things repaired. Repair Café wants to change all that, by promoting repairs, we want to help reduce mountains of waste.

Repair Café is also meant to put neighbours in touch with each other in a new way, and to discover that a lot of know-how and practical skills can be found close to home, visitors will learn the skills needed to repair things for themselves in the future. Repairs can save money and resources and can help minimise CO2 emissions. Repair Café also wants to show how much fun repairing things can be, and how easy it often is.

Repair Café International Foundation

The Repair Café concept arose in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 2009, and was formulated by Martine Postma, at the time a journalist/publicist. In 2010, she started the Repair Café International Foundation (see Repaircafe). This foundation provides professional support to local groups around the world wishing to start their own Repair Café. The foundation also supports the Repair Café in Stretford Public Hall.
