Experience the power of music on screen with a series of films spanning documentaries, biopics, and cult classics. Local partners will help bring the programme to life with complementary activities, from after-parties to panel discussions, making each night a full celebration of sound, screen, and culture.

6 February

Babylon (15)

Babylon follows a young reggae DJ from the Ital Lion sound system as he chases musical ambition while confronting racism, policing, and the rise of the National Front in Thatcher-era South London.

The night is powered by Copesetic Sound System, from the film screening to the vinyl-only afterparty, spinning ska, reggae, rocksteady, and roots — a full sound system experience from screen to dancefloor.

Indigo Girls: It’s Only Life After All (12A)

The documentary “Indigo Girls: It’s Only Life After All” follows the lives and careers of the band Indigo Girls, exploring their activism and personal stories. Directed by Alexandria Bombach, the film includes interviews with audience members who speak about how the Indigo Girls have impacted their lives. It also delves into the band’s history, from their early days in the mid-1980s to their current activism and personal challenges. The documentary combines archival footage with contemporary interviews, providing a comprehensive look at the Indigo Girls’ journey and their influence on fans and society
Followed by an interactive music workshop hosted by Lesbian Film Club and Featuring The Alabaster Queen and Sandra D

England Is Mine (15)

A portrait of Morrissey and his early life in 1970s Manchester before he went on to become the lead singer of seminal alternative rock band The Smiths.

England Is Mine was filmed in and around Stretford, with Stretford Public Hall playing a central role as both a base for the production team and a filming location for several scenes. Join us for a special discussion with Dan Williamson, former Chair of Friends of Stretford Public Hall, alongside Producer Baldwin Li and other local friends who appeared as extras, made cameo appearances, or worked behind the scenes on the film.

Stop Making Sense (PG)

A live performance of the band Talking Heads shot over the course of three nights at Hollywood’s Pantages Theatre in December of 1983 and featuring their most memorable songs.

Presented by Rainy Heart in their venue on the newly refurbished King Street at Stretford Mall.

Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody (12)
A joyous, emotional, heart-breaking celebration of the life and music of Whitney Houston, one of the greatest female R&B pop vocalists of all time, tracking her journey from obscurity to musical super stardom.

EmeraldLens CIC invites all women to stay after the screening to celebrate International Women’s Day together, with a joyful movement workshop and a disco.

 

20 March

Free Party: A Folk History (18)

A vibrant exploration of the UK’s free party and rave scene. The screening will feature a recorded message from the director, giving insight into the film and its story.

After the film, Nite School take over with an afterparty, celebrating the sounds and energy of the scene. Expect an evening of film, music, and community — from screen to dancefloor.

 

 

A Bar serving alcoholic and soft drinks as well as snacks will be available at the screenings.
